Wizarding Weekend at Kennedy School 2022!

What a magical weekend!

Once again, PDXpelliarmus teamed up with McMenamins Kennedy School to present Wizarding Weekend, three days of magical fun for a great cause!

Kennedy School showed all seven movies, Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley featured local vendors and artists, and we opened the Great Hall for activities like trivia, costume contests, and magical games!

In between all that fun, you donated 525 books to Children’s Book Bank! Those books went to CBB’s Building Home Libraries and Free Summer Book Fairs! We also raised $1,500 to donate direct to local teachers to help build their classroom libraries! McMenamin’s donated a portion of ticket sales from the movies to Basic Rights Oregon, in the amount of $5,752!

Thank you to everyone who came and helped us share the magic. We will see you again in 2023!

Pride is Magic, and PDXpelliarmus went to Pride this year with the goal to celebrate our Pride, to connect to our community, and to raise funds for New Avenues for Youth. It was cold and muddy, but still full of magic.

2021 Rose City Comic Con

PDXpelliarmus brought some magic to the 2021 Rose City Comic Con! We hosted a booth in the exhibit hall featuring our wizard activist accessories like pronoun House Pride buttons, magnets, tote bags, and Portable Patronuses! This year we also featured real wood wands made for us by Mainsail Woodworks.

We were also part of two panels: “Exceeding the Author”, and “The Fandom That Lived”. In the first we talked more about the idea that a fandom can exist beyond its creator, and in the second, we talked about how to be part of a fandom with a problematic creator.

Most importantly, we got the chance to connect to many members of our community, to give Harry Potter fans a safe and welcoming place to share and celebrate their fandom!

2019 Rose City Comic Con

Rose City Comic Con 2019 is done, and it was magical!

We want to send out massive gratitude to our volunteers, from patronus painters to boxers and button makers, and to all the people who spent time at our booth.

We could NOT have done it without all of you. If you didn’t get to volunteer or visit with us, just know that we brought a little extra magic to Rose City, let people live their Quidditch and Hogwarts fantasies, test their HP knowledge, and build bowtruckles. While having all that fun, we also collected 22 backpacks and enough school supplies to fill half of them for students served by School Uniting Neighborhoods in North Portland. We also raised $700 for them through sales and cash donations.

July 26-28, 2019, PDXpelliarmus returned to Kennedy School for the third year to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday! Every bar and restaurant at Kennedy School offered Harry Potter-inspired food and drink specials. They showed ALL EIGHT movies, with %50 percent of the ticket proceeds going to SMART – Start Making a Reader Today.

PDXpelliarmus hosted Diagon Alley, bringing in local artists and craftspeople selling everything from butterbeer fudge to jewelry to wands!

There were also activities, such as the Horcrux Hunt, costume contests, trivia, Quidditch, and Wizards’ Chess!

House Points were awarded for donations and successful completion of the Horcrux Hunt, with Gryffindor winning!

In the end, McMenamins Kennedy School donated $4348 to SMART, and PDXpelliarmus collected a pile of school supplies for students part of the Schools Uniting Neighborhoods program operated by Sefl Enhancement Inc in North Portland. We also donated a portion of our sales, totaling $600.

Barnes & Noble Bookfair!

For the 2019 Yule Ball, we’re teaming up with Barnes & Noble to help us turn muggles into wizards! From April 27th-30th, the following voucher can be used in ANY Barnes & Noble store and at BN.com, and a portion of the sale will be donated to the Children’s Book Bank!

On Saturday, April 27th, we will be at the Lloyd Center Barnes & Noble (1317 Lloyd Center) from 1pm to 4pm. Come join us for games and crafts! We will be collecting books and tallying House points! You can find more information here.

2019 Accio Books is Coming!

The 2019 Accio Books campaign is just days away! This year, PDXpelliarmus will be collecting books for The Children’s Book Bank!

The Children’s Book Bank mission is to fill children’s homes and lives with beautiful, engaging books. Through their Building Home Libraries program, they provide books to Head Start students throughout Portland. Every June, they host free book fairs in underserved K-8^th grade schools to keep kids reading throughout the summer. Since becoming a 501c3 nonprofit in 2008, The Children’s Book Bank has organized over 10,000 community volunteers to channel over 650,000 books into the hands and homes of over 50,000 children in need in the Portland area.

To help them turn young muggles into wizards, we will be collecting new and gently used children’s books, start at the Accio Books Kickoff Party on Thursday, April 4th, at The Nerd Out (3308 NE Belmont St) , from 6-10pm. There will be trivia, food and drink specials, and House Points will be awarded. The magical folks of The Nerd Out will also be donating $1 for each butterbeer sold!

Rose City Comic Con 2018

Rose City Comic Con 2018 was amazing! Exhausting, but amazing.

PDXpelliarmus had a booth in the PDX Play Fair where nerds of all ages could pick up some wizard activist supplies, create their own mini monster book of monsters, try their hand at Quidditch, or pose for photos with some of our magical props.

On Saturday, our Headmistress, Brandie, led a story time, reading from Tales of Beedle the Bard. We also hosted two panels, Fan Activism and Trivia Of Advancing Difficulty. The TOADs panels was particularly fun, with a full room of enthusiastic HP nerds testing their knowledge.
